Irene D-SNAP fraud probe: No arrests, most fired Connecticut workers back on job (video, document)

More than a year after dozens of state employees were terminated amid allegations of food stamp fraud following Tropical Storm Irene, most have gotten their jobs back, and no one has been arrested.
A probe into whether there was any criminal wrongdoing on the part of state employees or other state residents is ongoing.
After the August 2011 storm, more than 1,000 state employees and thousands of private citizens applied for and received benefits through D-SNAP, or the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The applicants typically got between $200 and $1,200 via a debit card.
The state Department of Social Services, which administers the program, did a post-disaster review, to determine if beneficiaries had obtained benefits improperly, such as by understating their incomes.

New Haven cops, ex-officer could face trials in gunplay incident

NEW HAVEN — Police officers are held to a higher standard.
That’s what Judge Maureen Keegan said before she decided to move on with criminal cases for a former New Haven police officer and two current officers on unpaid leave after they allegedly fired shots into the air after a night at a bar.

Hamden settles police brutality suit for $55,000

HAMDEN — The town Thursday disclosed it settled an excessive force lawsuit against the Police Department last year for $55,000.
Mayor Scott Jackson called it a “business decision” to settle as opposed to taking the case to trial.
The suit had been filed by Stephen and Nicholas Alberino in U.S. District Court in 2008. While the case was settled early last year, town officials refused to release the amount involved until now.
